A Place in the Sunburst!

One Sunburst medallion to rule them all.

Incredible (and I mean that in the literal sense of ‘not believing it) news, friends! The Dead Kid Detective Agency has been shortlisted for the Sunburst Award in the category of young adult fiction!

The Sunburst Award for Excellence in Canadian Literature of the Fantastic is an annual award recognizing writing in two categories: adult and young adult. The awards, named after the first novel by Phyllis Gotlieb, a pioneer in contemporary Canadian science fiction, consists of a cash award of $1,000 and a totally boss ‘Sunburst’ medallion.

This year, The Dead Kid Detective Agency was selected as a finalist, alongside

Ultraviolet by R.J. Anderson

All Good Children by Catherine Austen

The Summer of Permanent Wants by Jamieson Findlay

Blood Red Road 1: Dustlands by Moira Young

I’ve read a couple of the other finalists, and let me tell you, I have no shot at all! (Those are way better books!) Still, it’s thrilling to be nominated and included in a shortlist with such excellent books. I celebrated by having my face melted off at a Hives concert.

I am extremely thankful to ECW Press, for submitting my novel, and to the 2012 Sunburst Award Jurors. The winners will be announced this fall. Wish me luck!
